Tales of Fantasy Alpha Preview

Tales of Fantasy is one of the newest titles from IGG. It is their latest attempt at offering a gaming experience that cannot be found elsewhere. While it is only recently that they concluded their alpha test, they have graciously allowed me to write up some thoughts so far.

One of the biggest features that IGG boasts in the promotional materials is the ability to fight while mounted. The original translations say that you can do this at level 20, which really disappointed me. However once you go through their tutorial missions you will find that at about level 6 or 7 a quest to get a mount will open up and you can indeed fight while riding that mount immediately. With the testing being so short, I was unable to obtain any of the really neat looking mounts that are shown in the videos. There is little doubt that they are there as I saw others riding them around. Most likely this is due to their refusal to sleep and a dependence on energy drinks to give them maximum time to play. In any case the ability to fight while mounted is a fun concept, and further testing should reveal more about how this benefits the player.

While not as slick as the cel shaded graphics of Zu Online, another IGG title, the graphics are a lot better than one expects in a free to play game. Everything is crisp, easy to see, and visually appealing. Spells have various graphical effects that look on par with the latest subscription based games. Even the mounts move the way you expect them to, rather than with stiff, jagged movements that some games utilize to save time and money.

One disappointing thing about the limited testing time was not being able to participate in the faction based PvP system that the game boasts. This will be something to look into more when a longer testing period, or open beta, finally comes.

On the note of testing, closed beta is expected to launch sometime in April. As with their closed Alpha test there will be prizes for recruiting others to join in the test: http://tof.igg.com/news/view.php?id=219
